Black Friday starts as early as midnight between Thursday and Friday. Most stores (Target, Wal-Mart, Kohl's, Best Buy, etc) open very early, 4, 5, and 6 am. Some offer special prizes or offers if you're one of the first 50 or so (Old Navy is offering a free MP3 player to the first 50 to 200, if you spend $20). Most of the info will be in ads in your local paper today and tomorrow. I suggest buying both today's and tomorrow's and then making a list before heading out. Oh, and wear sweats. This is full-body-contact shopping!
