Sony Disables PlayStation Network After Security Breach

By  |  Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 10:46 am

Sites and services go down all the time. Just ask Amazon. And all their customers. But they weren’t the only ones to suffer a massive outage this week, as Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) has been offline for several days now. After a long period of silence, Sony has finally provided some situational insight:

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th.

Of course what they’re saying is that they’ve been hacked. And until Sony figures out what’s going on and how to stop it, they’ve pulled the network plug. So the forensics team has probably been doing their thing, maybe law enforcement too, as the engineers bolster PlayStation Network defenses.

Unfortunately, Sony hasn’t provided an ETA for PSN service restoration. And I know several of my work buddies with PS3s are suffering from Call of Duty, Black Ops withdrawal. But I’m not sure they appreciated my repeated mocking suggestions to join me on the superior Xbox Live.

Well, if you WANT to fork up money to Microsoft just to PLAY online EVERY MONTH, you're better off taking your life's savings, and flushing it down the toilet. Sure, I'm pissed off that the PS Network is down, but I like Sony for not making me pay them monthly to play. Microsoft? You pay, you play. You also pay to download lots of things from them. Sony? You just pay for some downloads. Free play. End of story….PERIOD!

  10. Moderate Fanboy Says:

Yup, free to play. When it isn't down. Which it has been for almost a week. So have fun not playing online while I play a YEARLY fee for uninterrupted service =)

We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.

We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.

  18. X-bs Says:

Of course! X-box cannot be hacked… The hackers won´t bother with X-box…

  19. Victor Pacheco Says:

  20. thought Says:

But everyone who is mad at the hackers, probably are the ones that can't hack anyway, if i could hack a game, or two it would probably be fun as long as it's not causing anyone else grief.

  21. SMD Says:

Or, maybe Sony just shouldn't sue every kid with some technical ability becuase it might lead to playing theiur games for free (which is what this is really about, right? the lawsuit against the kid whose friends are super hackers?)

  22. Michael Gabriel Says:

how long does this going to last? im etching to play NBA 2k11with my brothers.

  23. bht.arn Says:

I don't think they realize how badly this is going to effect them.
Sony had a pricey but reliable/quality image to their products.

This is going to damage not just their image, but people's perception of them as a company…which could be the more dangerous of the two.

  24. Odilia Bartlett Says:

I hope Sony has already solved this. If not, then it will really bring a bad effect to its products and services.
