Microsoft PDA Patent

Portable Information Device and System and Method for Downloading Executable Instructions From the Computer to the Portable Information Device

Filed August 9th, 1995

This is kind of amazing–it’s a PDA (with LCD screen and control buttons) in a floppy-disk case, so you could transfer data from a PC by popping it in a disk drive. It’s vaguely reminiscent of Franklin’s REX PDA, and I don’t remember Microsoft or anyone else actually selling it. It might have been quite successful until floppy disks started to vanish–which they did within a few years, thanks to Zip drives, CD burners, and the Internet.
