Google Earth 5.0: Oceans, the Past…Even Mars

Google EarthI’m at the California Academy of the Sciences in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for the event at which Google is unveiling version 5.0 of Google Earth–which appears to be available for download right now. So far, the event is interesting, inspiring, and, then–but wireless connectivity here is super-spotty, so I’m going to keep this brief and tell you more later.

This new version of Google’s amazing digital atlas looks to be packed with new stuff: For the first time, it includes most of the planet, in the form of its oceans. There’s also a timeline slider that lets you reference old satellite imagery as well as the newest available stuff. And Google has mapped Mars, including Google Street View-like photos.

Here’s Al Gore, who’s here, and understandably excited about Google Earth in general and the new version’s power as an educational tool in particular–I shot it in the dark from the back row, so it’s kinda pointillist. More about Google Earth 5.0 soon, but if you download and try the new version, let us all know what you think…

I haven’t tried it yet, but I am impressed that Google released the Linux version simultaneously with the Windows and OSX versions.

Hmm. Just downloaded the Linux version, and all I get is a blank window where the Earth should be. Past versions of Google Earth worked fine, so I think it must be something with the new version.

    Is anyone having similar problems?

I havent been able to upgrade since Version 4.2 of Earth. One thing google does not get is support. There is a line of people with the same install error I have for about a year now. There is no support on how to fix it or even an attempt to try and fix it in new versions.

The excuse of beta, is not an excuse for zero support, infact if anything beta software should have more and better support then gold software. But then again, Google does what it wants…………. Bummer i never get to use the new stuff.

I cannot wait to learn to read more of this good topic. So much of computer Ive never even regarded. You sure did put a whole new twist on something that Ive heard very much about. I dont believe Ive actually read anything that does this subject of the same quality justice as you merely did.
