iFrauds: The Fakest iPods Ever!

They look like iPods--sort of. They play music--kind of. And to be honest, they scare me.

ifrauds-1

A bunch of clones of the last-generation iPod Nano. I’m not sure if there are still factories churning these out somewhere, or if they just haven’t been able to sell all the ones they made last year.

chinese fakes are cheap, alibaba and taobao are world’s largest portals for counterfeiters

  2. Pat Barringer Says:

I love pic 17, where the fake iPod has none of the endorsements that the real one does. This looks like the best sale ever.

  3. Lawrence Velázquez Says:

    #13 is great. MP7?

  4. jbelkin Says:

#6 is a DAP ‘knockoff’ I’ve seen at TRU for $39 for a 2 GB version. I think it might be a Sandisk – one of the other minor players has a cross version like this …

  5. jbelkin Says:

Pretty funny stuff. There is on possible use for these. If you live in a high crime area, if someone tries to rob you of your ipod, just hand this over.

  6. Mike Says:

MPEG-7 Is a MPEG statnard to describe and catalog multimedia content. A Portable player that can read and write XML files!!! Cool!!!

  7. travis Says:

I actually find this article a bit invalid.

    (To the writer)

Have you not ever heard of “MP4 players”? They do not play MPEG-4 video. It is a collective term to refer to cheaply made Chinese MP3 players made for export. 99% of the time they can only play an obscure video codec (often included with the companion Mini-CD) at half the frame rate.

Not to mention, many of these devices bear NO RELATION to looking like an iPod, nor do anywhere on the package do they state they are trying to be an iPod or trying to clone them. I mean, some of them are clearly MP4 clones, but as for the other players you’ve shown, they are simply MP4 players.

  8. Fred Says:

21 pages! Sorry, please don’t ask us to click through that many pages. I usually stop at 1.

  9. NanoGeek Says:

    @ travis

They may not say they are trying to copy iPods, but with names like “iPlay” and the fact that they look nearly identical to the iPods (or at least bear a stunning similarity to Apple’s designs), they sure seem to be cheap rip-off products.

  10. inigo131 Says:

Thank You! This made me laugh!
    MP7???? 🙂

  11. arkanlasida Says:

They sold it like peanuts here. Actually, the cheap iFrauds are much more popular than the expensive iPods in Indonesia. The prices for iFrauds are relatively low for our economic standards; yet the real iPod still goes up for the higher economic class.

Seeing that the lower class is plenty here the iFraud is more popularly sold. My peer in school has one.

  12. thehumanyawn Says:

I think they called it an MP7 player because it lists seven features

  13. girlslashwoman Says:

Yeah, I agree. Some are obvious fakes but some aren’t.
Plus comparing the iPod nano and the iPlay is like comparing a lambo with… well, a fake lambo. They obviously aren’t going to put any effort into it if they’re only trying to sell it for $50. All they care about is that someone out there will see the $100 difference, not care about all the frills, and buy it. Many do.

  14. smellygeekboy Says:

    How many pages!?

  15. this buddy of mine Says:

“you no worry…it got Sony guts…you buy now!”

  16. Spot Cool Stuff Says:

I’m not saying I’d buy any of these. But just because they are fakes doesn’t automatically mean they are worse.

The only one of these fakes I’ve personally used is the first one, the iPlay. It isn’t compatible with iTunes, which is a deal killer for me personally. But it does have an FM radio, which the real Nano doesn’t. And maybe that’s a trade off (iTunes for a radio) that makes sense of some people.

  17. Spot Cool Stuff Says:

I’m not saying I’d buy any of these. But just because a product is a fake that doesn’t necessarily mean it is worse.

I’ve personally used one of these fakes, it iPlay. It isn’t compatible with iTunes, which is a deal killer for me personally. But it does have an FM radio, which the real Nano doesn’t. And maybe that’s a trade off (iTunes for a radio) that makes sense of some people.

  18. NanoGeek Says:

Though, as Mr. McCracken pointed out, it was very cheaply made and the screen developed a defect within hours of purchase.

  19. Harry McCracken Says:

Travis: Trust me, almost every MP3 player I saw at the show was trying very, very hard to look like an iPod. (A few intentionally depart from iPod imitation in one way or another, and I saw a handful that weren’t iPod-like at all.) And I know about MPEG4 (although I’m not sure if all the players labeled as MP4 players support it.) But there were also MP5 and MP7 players for sale.

Spot Cool Stuff: I bought the iPlay, so I can state definitively that it’s worse than an iPod. The ones I didn’t buy, I can’t be definitive about…

Those that complained about the number of pages in the slideshow–thanks for the input. I’m experimenting with slideshows, which are a pretty standard feature these days, and which help the site get to the traffic levels it needs to be a sustainable business. But I’m listening to all input.

    Thanks for the comments!

  20. krimsonblue Says:

It’s ridiculous how many fakes you can find out there of just about anything.

  21. wholesomepoop Says:

    Hahaha,this is so fake,its funny.Favorite photo is #13.

  22. Justin Says:

I wonder if the camera on the fake touch is any better than the iphone camera that took all these fuzzy photos? I can’t be much worse than Apples offering.

  23. The REAL iPod Guy Says:

This is incredible… so much effort to copy the iPods!

    Anthony

    http://ipodmarket.com.au

  24. Lorenz Gude Says:

I got a free 512 MB shuffle knock off for attending a StoresOnline seminar here in Perth Western Australia. It looks exactly like the cross shaped control units shown in slide 12. The only thing wrong with it is that the software is immediately identified as spyware by AVG and the player is dependent of that software to be an MP3 player. The player appears well made and is attractive and it works with the sample songs on it. If the spyware is harmless I think it will be useful listening to podcasts – like TWIT – while exercising. If I find I prefer it to my Nano for that purpose I may actually buy a real shuffle. I haven’t seen any of these things here in Perth yet.

  25. Paul Says:

Oh man… you paid US$50.00 for that? The sacrifices some make for journalistic realism…

  26. Gnobuddy Says:

You certainly found a lot of obvious knock-offs, where it is clear that the manufacturer attempted to copy not only the functions but also the appearance of Apple products. iFraud is a fair description of these.

However, you seem to also apply the term “fraud” to EVERY audio/video player in your list, even the ones that don’t really look much Apple products beyond the fact that they play audio or video and have LCD displays. For instance, the ones with the cross-shaped control area.

This is very curious. Do you consider it fraud that Toyota, Ford, Chrysler, and Nissan all choose to use steering wheels, throttle pedals, brake pedals, and (sometimes) clutch pedals to control their cars? After all, these controls were not invented by any of these companies. Wikipedia says one Alfred Vacheron appears to have been the first to use a steering wheel on an automobile, in 1894, for instance; is it “scary” that other automobile manufacturers thought this was a good design to copy?

By the way, Apple didn’t invent the concept of a digital music player, any more than Ford invented the steering wheel. It seems one Kane Kramer was the inventor, 30 years ago, of the modern digital music player: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1053152/Apple-admit-Briton-DID-invent-iPod-hes-getting-money.html?ITO=1490

  27. trout8 Says:

    haha those are funny

    http://mytrout8.wordpress.com/

  28. Harry McCracken Says:

@gnobuddy: Thanks for the comments. I only included players in the story which were heavily, um, “inspired” by Apple designs. That included a few which departed from iPod style in a respect or two (such as the ones with cross-shaped controls) but copied it in most other respects. For the record, there were maybe two or three players at the show which were utterly unlike iPods, and I didn’t include ’em in the article.

  29. Angela Says:

I was a sucker….getting a good “deal” for my son…and now…2 weeks later, my other son plugged his real ipod into the computer to charge while the fake was charging, and now all I get on the fake is an hour glass on the screen….can anyone help????????????

  30. decemberdoom Says:

Whats the big deal, I would gladly buy one as long as they worked well. Apple Products aren’t anything special (sorry, they are extremely restrictive) anyway, so why not buy a knockoff as long as it works? Besides, no Ipod is worth more than 100 bucks in my book.

  31. alibaba Says:

This is why we need to nuke Communist China. Frauds, thieves, fakers.

  32. Sue Radd Says:

Hey Harry — this slideshow made for a great break. Nice to see some humor interspersed with solid tech coverage. (BTW, *really* appreciate your coverage of the Pre, as I’m in the market for a new smartphone.)

Loved the “unboxing” treatment. So many peeps treat this like some sort of untouchable ritual, it’s nice to see some levity. Hey, could you unbox a durian? (Jay Sherman: “It Stinks!!”)

  33. Fluffycatfan Says:

Morons… If you want the real thing just get it. Man, whoever made these is very dumb. No offense to the blog owner just to the people who made these.

  34. lnfinit3 Says:

dude i didnt know h&k made mp7s that play video listen to radio and plays mp3s man i should get one and it’s only $99 hope it shoots well i mean sound quality is good

  35. archie leach Says:

Some of these are not fakes, but are cheap attempts to produce a media player. Some were far enough away from ipods to be seen as something else.
Would you call A Creative Zen an ifraud? Lets not forget that Apple was guilty of plagerism themselves when it came to the original ipod OS. At least that’s the way the courts saw it. I myself have an iPhone, a Zen V plus and a Zen vision m. All great pieces of hardware. My daughter has what you would call an iFraud with limited functionality… only it’s shaped like an anime barbie. She loves it.

  36. A Non Moose Says:

MP4, or MPEG-4, IS a legit audio compression as well. It specifically refers to AAC audio. Apple uses it extensively, everything in the Apple music store is AAC.

  37. cjs Says:

i support ipod clones because ipods are programmed to crash if you piss off apple so you have to pay apple hundreds of dollars to fix them thats why i sold my 80gb because it broke 6 times because of apples cheap ass programming and i bought a clone of a itouch, nano, and shuffle all for under $70 each and not one problem with them as for features if you have an ipod no voice recording you have to buy a fm transmitter and the battery life sucks dont say i dont know anything about electronics i program apps build sites and mod game systems for a living and i have had numerous people that need me to fix ipods but dont hate something because its better and cheaper than your apple shit so take your $300+ ipod turn it sideways and cram it up your narrow ass

    SUPPORT THE ANTI-APPLE GENERATION

  38. seremina Says:

Thank you for the slideshow-documentary on fake Ipods. I don’t have an Ipod myself, as its too restrictive for my liking.

But I do have to tell you something. The fact the instructions seem “wrong” or “incorrect version” is common with knockoffs. I discovered this when I bought what I thought was a particular brand of camera. Turns out it was a counterfeit, as the instructions were for an entirely different brand and type of camera and looked photocopied.

I wish China and other countries that made fakes would at least let us know which ones are truly fake without trying to “say” they are that “brand”! I don’t mind the fakes when the prices are cheaper, but I -do- mind when the quality is worse than the real thing and yet tout they are a particular brand but aren’t.

  39. talksense101 Says:

Since when did any device rectangular in shape with a LCD screen become a iPod rip off? Pic 6 has nothing similar to an iPod or pic 8 for that matter. I didn’t look at further pictures.

  40. Matt Quinn Says:

A year or so ago my little daughter got an Ipod (Nano) as a school prize. As a trained AV tech of some 30 years standing I immediately identified it as a cheap, nasty shoddy piece of throw-away tat that wasn’t worth ten quid let alone what they’re priced at in the shops! The software itself is virtually a virus! Even now I still get spammed constantly even though the horrible little piece of **** was only ever plugged into MY computer once!

…thing is that piece of tat was a GENUINE Apple Ipod! It’s dead now of course; too fragile and badly made to last any length of time.

My Brother’s a cop out in Hong Kong. I had him send me half a dozen ‘fakes’ over. Some are better built and more solid than the ‘real’ Ipod. One even reads SD cards so is ‘infinitely’ expandable. Others have voice recorders. A couple fit the cases we bought for the original. The kid’s happy… I had no issues with the software which is a simple file manager, and despite them having been up Scottish mountains clipped to the outside of jackets, thrown into bags and forgotten for weeks, sat on, tossed around in the boot of a car.. NOT ONE has died!

On average these are £2-£5 (about $3-$8) on the streets of HK. And frankly, THAT’S all they’re worth! Quite WHY the masses feel the need to pay upwards of 20 times more to be shafted by a big American corporation is beyond me.

Still, having a real Ipod in the house has done something positive for me. It’s alerted me to the fact that Apple actually ISN’T the reliable high-end quality brand I’d come to think of it as. I HAD been considering moving my business (I run a video production company) away from PC based systems to Apple…. but you know; having had just a little taste of an Apple product I’m heartily disinclined to make that £25,000 leap.

Our Ipod is dead! Long live the fakes!

  41. Yert Says:

I clicked through to the last link straight away to see if the Zune would be included as a joke. The first generation Zune certainly was closer to these then it is to the innovative style of the Zune and its software now.

  42. Clark Bunch Says:

Imitation is the highest form of flattery. It speaks to the popularity of the iPod, and it’s design, that dozens of products look as much like it as possible.

It also atests that there are fly-by-night cheap skates ripping off average Joe’s on the street that can’t tell the difference. Imagine little Johnny waking up Christmas morning, and being the only kid in the 8th grade that got an iPlay for Christmas.

BTW, even though I own a real iPod, I don’t use iTunes. I recommend Amazon Music for downloading mp3’s. They’re not funky kind of encrypted like iTune downloads.

  43. Cheri iParr Says:

Reminds me of the Mypod episode of The Simpsons where Lisa get’s fake white headphones so people think she has an mypod – they were called iphonies!

  44. Shane Says:

ya I bought some VMX players they look like the ipod and they have the interface like in pic 20 I sold a couple of them lol and gave one to my brother for a gift. I personally don’t like them I have a few left to sell I get about $45-50 each.

  45. Alex Says:

Wow, funny stuff. Once, I saved a couple who were about to buy a Shuffle clone thinking it was the real thing. It’s scary how long a cashier can give you the evil eye.

I love that your MP3 player developed a screen defect! Just shows the shamelessness of these companies.

  46. Justin Bullock Says:

Holy Crap! We have the iPlay!!! IT SUCKS!!!! my parents thought it was real and forked $50 for it!

  47. Jack Says:

Matt Quinn, the Apple software isn’t created to, nor in any way does, cause malicious damage to your computer, its files or peripherals. So your thirty years of ‘tech’ experience is already challenged, and I’m not even thirty. Take care of your electronic equipment, and it will not break. Don’t comment on the Internet unless you have something interesting to say, or rather, an interesting way to say it. Your bashing of Apple’s products for no apparent reason is just proving your idiocy to the rest of the people who read Technologizer.

McCracken, thanks for the interesting read.

  48. duhtutorials Says:

It’s amazing how companies from overseas (mainly China) will develop cheap imitations of genuine products sold here in the US. THEN try and sell them to people and sadly, people are so gullible. There are plenty of flea markets around where I live and there are these people with stands who sell a wide variety of fake products such as this.

  49. Mikee Says:

    To the writer:

MP4, version 3, is AAC, the file format that iPods use.

It’s also known as MP2, version 7, which may be where the MP7 is coming from.

  50. Duarte Says:

Actually i figured what MP7 meant! (look at the picture p.13)

    1. Audio
    2. Video
    3. Camera
    4. Speakers
    5. FM Radio
    6. Games
    7. & More <— MP7 !!! 7 features!

  51. tim greene (='.'=)? Says:

    1) use it as a skipping stone , over water ,
    2) fix my wobbly table with it , put under one leg ,
    3) you’re getting robbed!?….”here take my _iPod!!” *wink wink*
    4) give them to blind kids for christmas
    5) give them to deaf kids for christmas
    6) christmas tree ornanments!! 🙂
    7) bicycle spoke ligthts

    there!!! an MP7 😀

  52. pete Says:

you gotta see the ‘sci phone’ – a iphone rip off sheesh – its sold on a popular online trader site in New Zealand

  53. Allan Says:

Nice collection. But I think Apple does not invest a lot on the parts that make the ipods.I’m sure that they use cheap electronic parts and cheap hardware. Why do u think ipods explode or freeze or are so delicate (plz!) Apple does not buy super-quality hardware but sell the ipod a lot more than the production cost. It’s a rip off! I’vd held ipods classics before and they feel so cheap but yet are so damn expensive. I’m not saying that ipods are crap but I’m definitely saying that Apple gots some damn secrets. All those cheap ipods look alikes might have a lot in common with the real ipods……….

  54. Weasel Says:

Slides 5 and 6 don’t come even close to being counterfeits. Flat + Display + Controls does not make it an Apple…

Slide 13 could very well be out-of-context and the MP7 could be a model number or even a mistake buy the person who wrote the sign up, but we’ll never know.

I love the site’s articles generally, but you guys do tend to pad your articles too much. You could have dropped the above 3 slides and had a more accurate article.

  55. Charles Baker Says:

Anybody that thought this was interesting should check out this site. It is a Mall retailer with stores all over the Philippines. Just click on their MP3/Mp4/or Mp5 tab. (The current exchange rate is about 48 pesos per U.S. dollar) so 2400 pesos would be $50. http://www.cdrking.com/index.php

  56. Chris Says:

I’m having mixed views about this article, personally. Yes, some of these are obvious knock-offs/clones. But the others…just because one device provides similar functionality and a vaguely similar form-factor to another doesn’t mean one is a knock-off/clone of another. :-/ Especially when the ‘clone’ is providing *more* features than the supposed ‘original’.

Now, if you want to talk knock-offs of the rip-off variety, there’s the stunt a local car dealership pulled on me. Their advertisement included a walk-in drawing where you were guaranteed to win one of several prizes (a format used by more than one company around usually involving 3 prizes with 1:250,000 to 1:400,000 or so odds, and the other 249,997 to 399,997 being something like a $5 gas card or something equally cheap)–in this case the one of the rare prizes was a PS3, and the ‘common’ prize was a ‘music player’ that appeared to be iPod-like and claimed to be a $15 value (I went in knowing it *wasn’t an Apple product, obviously…but I *was* expecting it to be one of those lower-end MP3 players). I got there, ended up with the cheap prize and…discovered it was a *FM radio* in an iPod-like shape (flat piece of plastic where a ‘screen’ would be, and the thing didn’t even have an actual tuner as such–instead, pressing the disc scanned frequencies until it managed to lock-in on one). To add insult to waste of time, these things were available at the local Dollar Tree…not even a ‘$15 value’. :-/

  57. Kalon Says:

I’ve bought several of these over the years. Not because I though the were ipods or cool, almost like ipods. But because they’re inexpensive and provide everything I need. They even play .ogg which is a bonus.

Quite a few of the players shown are not even copying Apple designs much less trying to fool you with their packaging. Mind you, Apple didn’t invent mp3/4 player though seems many people seem to think so.

This article is nothing more than iSnobbery.

  60. JE LaBarre Says:

t wonder if any of these clones could be made to run Rockbox, thus making a cheaper alternative for running OSS media software.

  61. smokealoka Says:

Plenty of Apple haters here-too bad you weren’t smart enough to invest in their stocks jealous guys!

The real story is that China looks the other way on copyright infringement and with China and the rest of Asia supplying all of the world’s consumer goods they can continue to disregard any copyrights without fear of repercussion. US Corporations use de facto slaves, who are also often very young, to make these much desired consumer items.

    Viva capitalism!

I bought an imitation 8Gb Shuffle and it works a treat. Cost me about £5. Why spend £70 for the brand name?

I don’t know about being scared by a phone. I mean, really, what’s the worst that could happen? — call eves-dropping by a sinister gang that manufactured knockoffs for the purpose of identity theft?

In my field, doing quality checks for tanning salon beds, I have seen numerous knockoff designer tanning lotions that, when tested, didn’t have any of the claimed SPF protection against UV light needed by frequent tanning enthusiasts.

A knockoff in certain categories of products is scary for a reason, it can literally HARM a person’s health.

While I understand and sympathize with the concern for knockoff products in technology, remember that other products outside of purses and cellphones can have a less glamorized impact on each of us if not checked.

    Cheers,
