Gmail App for iOS Launches, Breaks

By  |  Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 11:26 am

Yesterday, Google’s official Gmail app for iOS was a rumor. Today, it’s live on the App Store. But as Sarah Perez of TechCrunch is reporting, the Internet’s gut reaction is not a happy one–especially since the app launches with a cryptic error message right now. (Maybe not 100% of the time, but I got it.)

My biggest disappointment: The app doesn’t support multiple accounts. If you have two Google accounts–one for work, one for personal use–you know that any solution that supports both of them is instantly more useful than any one that doesn’t. I’ve been using a $1.99 third-party app called G-Whizz Google Apps Browser to traverse almost instantly between both of my accounts. Looks like I’ll still need it…

The buildup was so large this morning, what an epic and utter failure. What did I expect from a company that can only truly do search. Google stuff always feels and is always stuck in beta mode. This is the last and final time I get anything made by Google. Google, make sure to promote all those clowns that were involved in this release and your journey will be complete.

It makes me wonder about Apple's iOS app approval process. We put up with lockin and censorship because, we are told, at least all the apps in the app store work and are not malware. Here's one that plainly did not work but it was approved.

So not only did Google's engineers submit an app that did not work, but Apple's crew approved it.

Who can we trust anymore if not Apple and Google?
