Google’s Image(s) Problem

I’m nowhere near as cranky a geek as John C. Dvorak, and I don’t expect Google to collapse anytime in the next decade or three. But I do agree with him that the new Google Images (which I liked when I saw it demoed at Google) has issues, especially over slowpoke connections.

I wonder how much internal exercising Google features get over real-world connections–1.5 megabit and worse. That said, I was pretty amazed at how well Wave did it's live updating over such circuits.

It's the same sort of problem as 1990s web developers working over frame relay and producing sites that crawled over 9600 bps dialup, without noticing or caring.
